Corby's five pins helps C-L to 6th at Swan Valley

SAGINAW - Senior wrestler Donnie Corby of Cros-Lex continued his winning ways in December with five more victories, all by pin, at last Saturday's Saginaw Swan Valley Invitational.

Corby, who had reached the 15 mark in career victories the week before at the Caro Invitational, improved to 16-0 this winter by sweeping his matches at 140 pounds at the Swan Valley tournament.

"Nobody tested him at all. We've been looking for some competition for him, but it's been hard," explained C-L coach Joe Lilly. " We thought there was a kid from Dundee that wrestled 135 last year that would move up to 140, but that didn't happen."

As a team, the Pioneers finished sixth overall among 11 teams. Dundee, a perennial state power, captured first while Swan Valley was second.

The Pioneers also had individual second place finishes from Adam Palleschi and Zach Fabian.

Palleschi lost in the 215 pound finals to Jimmy Rowe of Dundee, a runner-up in the State Finals a year ago. It was the first loss in 16 matches this season for Palleschi.

Fabian (12-4), meanwhile, lost a close decision to Swan Valley's Brandon Bell.

"He's wrestling well," noted Lilly. "He's lost to the kid from Caro - Cory Robinson, to the kid from Swan Valley, who was a pretty good wrestler, and to the kid from Lapeer East, who was, at least, a Regional qualifier, if not a State qualifier, last year. So, he's lost to some quality kids."

Also taking home medals for C-L were Shane DuRussel (3rd, 130) and Jacob Tanner (4th, 145).

The Pioneers return to action after the holiday break by competing at the North Branch Invitational on Jan. 5.
