Green Devils open East title defense this Friday

The GTC East is about to open its boys hoops schedule Friday night and Brown City, defending co-champion, would like to start it off right.

The Green Devils, who shared the East title with Harbor Beach last winter, will have no easy task as the Ubly Bearcats come to town. BC has started the season with a 3-1 record, with all three victories over BWAC teams. The lone loss was a humbling setback to a very good Reese squad, a favorite in the GTC West.

Ubly (1-2), meanwhile, started off with losses to Reese and USA, both unbeaten, and then knocked off undefeated Lakers last Friday. The Bearcats are expected to be a contender in the East.

"That had to be a big win for them over Lakers. The Lakers were unbeaten" said Coach Tony Burton of Brown City.

The Bearcats got a boost last week, too, with the return of guard Grant Pichla. The senior all-league player suffered a broken leg midway into the football season and has been sidelined since.

Burton added that Pichla is just one of Ubly's weapons.

"There's (Jordan) Kaufman, a great athlete, and (Steven) Weber, he's 6'5" and I think only a sophomore. Then they have those other guards - (Mitch) Cleary and (Jeremy) Kubacki - they both can light it up. They have quickness, athletes, size and they are traditionally strong. They have a lot of good qualities."

Jim Seidell, Burton's defensive coordinator, will have to devise a plan that keeps pressure on the perimeter, but also can collapse to the middle against Weber and Kaufman. A 6'2" forward, Kaufman turned in 25 points and 17 rebounds in the win over Lakers. In that same game, Weber notched 16 points.
