Illness leaves C-L a little less cheer-y

The competitive cheer season opened nearly three weeks earlier than usual, and then an illness to a veteran player added some extra problems for the Cros-Lex team last Saturday.

The result was a lesser final standing than usual at the CCCAM Invitational at Stoney Creek. Cros-Lex finished ninth out if 11 teams in the event, which was won by Ortonville-Brandon. Dearborn Divine Child was runner-up.

Stephanie Davis, Cros-Lex coach, said that one of her most experienced players, who takes a base position, was unable to compete because of a severe bout with the flu.

"It was still a good learning day," said Davis. "It was a little disappointing, the girls were disappointed.

"In the first two rounds, we scored okay. Those are things we can look for and work from," continued Davis. "There's no doubt in my mind that we'll bounce back."

Davis added that she has eight or nine girls that are in the line-up through all three rounds of competition, including the girl that was ill. She rotates in other girls in other positions each round.

Next on the schedule for the Cros-Lex cheer team is the Lapeer East Invitational on Sat., Jan. 5. The first of four BWAC meets will take place on Wed., Jan. 9 at Richmond.
